Who Are Your Paid Search Competitors?

When developing PPC campaigns, we begin by asking who you consider to be your paid search competitors. This helps us understand which businesses you see as your most significant direct competitors before we begin our own research.

For most clients, this is a list of 6 to 10 companies that come to mind quickly. These may be businesses you regularly compete against for leads, customers, market visibility, or sales. If there are 10 to 12 names, that is fine as well. If there are fewer, we can work from the information available.

You can send company names, website URLs, or both. If you do not know a competitor’s website URL, just send the business name. If the company is difficult to identify, including the city, state, or market area can help us confirm the right business.

Why We Ask for Competitor Information

Competitor information helps establish context before tool-based PPC research begins. It gives us a practical starting point for understanding the companies you already encounter in the market, the businesses your sales team hears about, and the brands your prospects may compare you against.

Blastoff Advertising uses PPC and search analysis tools to identify the broader competitive landscape, but your input is still important. The competitors you name often provide useful context about market position, sales pressure, customer perception, and where the campaign may need to compete most directly.

Direct, Indirect, and Distribution Competitors

We also want to know about significant indirect competitors, resellers, distributors, marketplaces, or other businesses that influence the competitive environment. These companies may not be exact matches to your business, but they can still affect paid search strategy, bidding pressure, messaging, and search visibility.

Identifying these businesses can help shape keyword strategy, ad messaging, landing page review, and campaign positioning. It can also help us understand whether certain search results are being influenced by companies outside your immediate direct-competitor list.

How Competitor Research Supports PPC Planning

Competitor research is not about copying another advertiser. It is about understanding the search environment before campaign strategy, targeting, ad copy, and landing page direction are finalized. That information can support stronger PPC campaign management, especially in markets where several advertisers are competing for the same high-intent searches.

It can also help inform how we evaluate campaign pressure over time. Related topics include PPC competitors and competitive non-brand search results.
